Nefertiti in the Altes Museum, Berlin - Jan 13th, 2008

(c. 1370 BC - c. 1330 BC) was the Great Royal Wife (or chief consort/wife) of the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten. She was the mother-in-law and probable stepmother of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun. Nefertiti may have also ruled as pharaoh in her own right under the name Neferneferuaten briefly after her husband's death and before the accession of Tutankhamun, although this identification is doubted by the latest research. Her name roughly translates to "the beautiful (or perfect) one has arrived". She was made famous by her bust, now in Berlin's Egyptian Museum ("Altes Museum" on the "Museumsinsel"), this is one of the most copied works of ancient Egypt.

Altes Museum - is one of several internationally renowned museums on Berlin's Museum Island.

The Brandenburger Tor - The monumental gate was designed by Carl Gotthard and commissioned by emperor Wilhelm II. it was built as a symbol of peace.

Brandenburger Tor -  During the Cold War, when the gate was located right near the border between East and West Berlin, it became a symbol of a divided city.

Brandenburger Tor - Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburger Gate has become the symbol of a reunified Berlin.

Brandenburger Tor - The design of the gate, 65.5 meter wide and 28 meter tall was based on the Propylaea, the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens. It was constructed between 1778 and 1791 and replaced an older city gate.

The Fernsehturm (German for "television tower") the tower was constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) administration who intended it as a symbol of Berlin, which it remains today

The Ishtar Gate from Babylon A reconstruction of the Gate and Processional Way was built at in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin

The Ishtar Gate - was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. It was constructed in about 575 BC by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on the north side of the city.

The Ishtar Gate - It stands 47 feet high and 100 feet wide (14 meters by 30 meters). The excavation ran from 1902-1914 and during that time 45 feet of the foundation of the gate was uncovered

Berliner Dom - Originally built between 1894-1905, members of the ruling dynasty of the time are buried in the crypt beneath it. Since then the church has been fully restored - reopening in 1993 after almost 40 years of restorations!

Berliner Dom - is the largest and most decorated church in Berlin. It is located on Museumsinsel, overlooking the sculptured lawns of the Lustgarten.

Berliner Dom - The main draw for me was the stunning 85 metre high dome. Not only is it beautifully ornate inside the dome, but better still, you can climb the 270 steps to the top of the dome for fabulous views over Berlin.
